8.8 cm Flak 18 rebuild

One of my Uncle's vet-bring-back treasures, is an "88" Flak 18 shell, dated 1938. It looked very incomplete, but I soon found that locating an 88 projectile was very difficult/ expensive. A fellow collector loaned me his complete 88 round & I drew a picture of it, complete with accurate measurements. I sent these to a relative who is a wood-working wizard & he agreed to give it a go. He did an excellent job, using old maple.

I researched fuze markings, duplicated those & painted it. The final painting has not been done yet, but it displays rather well.

Unlike the old fart holding the 88, who does not display well.

If anyone out there would like a copy of the dimensions of the 88 projectile, let me know. I would be glad to share them.

Good to see you, nice 88 round. The projectiles are exceedingly scarce as we've discovered, we had one sell here for the 88 Tiger. It sold at $500 CDN to a very young individual locally. I've had to do exactly what you have and made projectiles for scarce ammo...I still have a 105 for a WW1 German round to make... I expect to use wood too. Cinders will be jealous of your round...I think.

Jim...that will be challenge, a WW1 German 105. What will you use for a pattern?? Aren't 105's the ones that were at Brecourt Manor in "Band of Brothers"? In different accounts I've seen both 88's and 105's.

You betcha just to get a case would be nice that case looks in damn fine nik I have started the quest Jim I have a complete fuse (albiet a bit weathered) and a fuse holder so sorta starting at the top working down.

I flat don't know. I'm going to have to look a bit and guess from a rum jar I suppose. All blunt and thick like... Research needed here.

So, working like I did for the recent two I made projectiles for...I guess I'll have to make the whole rest out of Aluminum for you so it fits the fuse? That would start me drinking again I think. I'd also need a lathe with about a 40 foot bed.
