    Money Box Grenade

Seeing a recent thread regarding a No 36 grenade has prompted me to post a few pictures of this grenade that has been converted into a money box. The body is very well preserved and it almost seems tempting to restore it to a complete inert grenade casing by replacing the base plug and filler plug. However I will leave it as is because I have not seen these money box converted grenades advertised for sale often.

I believe that this is a No5 casing, I know the lever is, but the vendor seemed slightly unsure if it was a No5 or No36 casing.

It could be a #5 because the divots for the safety lever are further forward on a #36 that the #5...

I believe that there was a bit of a commercial enterprise converting these into money boxes although it was a somewhat limited size for that purpose. The base plug threads appear to have been partially machined out so that a plug doesn't actually screw in; a form of deactivation, together with the slot. I would guess that the money box grenade had a cork inserted into it's base to retain the coins inside.
