Yet another early Naval SMLE from the auction that later was modified to fit into the system. She started out in 1905 at BSA as a SMLE Mk I which at some time in her life was upgraded to SMLE Mk I***. It lacks any “N” property marks on the receiver but was fitted later with a naval style fixed charging bridge. Besides the profile of the charger bridge there is only one “N” naval inspector mark on the receiver round, thus I assume she is of naval heritage.
Fast forward to the 1930’s, the SMLE Mk I*** is obsolete but still one comes into the shop needing a barrel, what is an armour to do?? Well this one was fitted with a SMLE Mk III profile barrel and rear sight mount in 1937. The original SMLE Mk I*** profile forend was modified for the SMLE Mk III rear sight protector (the screw was not countersunk as it is on standard forends and stands a little proud) and sight mount. The barrel band remained in its original location requiring the use of the SMLE Mk I style front handguard and the SMLE Mk I front sight protector which was modified most likely during its Mk I*** life to Mk III style was also retained. Finally note the modified SMLE Mk I bolt head, if it still works…..
The only thing left was to remark it as a SMLE Mk III, (which is poorly done in comparison with the work involved to get it there) but now it is back into the system as standard pattern for the time.Information
