Never ever having been a "Redleg"so I never manhandled artillery pieces (except pack howitzers)... why do the 2 guys on the barrel look like they are working against each other?

I think they're just trying to get it moving.

Weight on the barrel to lift the trail to be able to swing the gun around. Probably to align the trail to hook up the towing vehicle.

I think they are pushing down on the barrel, to lift the rear and allow it to start moving

Yes, they are pushing down to raise the rear out of the mud.

I think they're limbering it up instead of ceasing fire. The trails are long and you can't back too close...anyway...

That may not have been possible. They may have been on a narrow stretch of ground firm enough that the truck wouldn't get bogged, or ground known to be clear of mines.
