Serialed 07 Bayonets

A while ago I posed a question about why my 1921 Lithgow '07 bayonet was serialed to the 1921 Lithgow MKIII I have.
Looking for other information I found this snippet from the Lithgow Museum on "Markings".

"Up until the beginning World War II bayonets were often serial numbered to the rifle with the number stamped on the pommel."

Whether Enfield or any of the other makers of '07's did this I do not know but at least I now know why it bears the rifles serial No.

As we've discussed numerous times...the bayonets were never matched at the factory but stamped as a control measure at unit level. It's actually a waste of time...completely. Note it states often. Means there was no directive, just a non standard practise.

Sorry Jim Lithgow stamped the Numbers on the bayonet. Each box of eight consecutive numbered rifles had eight bayonets numbered to the rifles. The MD and inventory number were added before issue.

All right then, doesn't surprise me to find that out. I know you did things a bit different...down there... That would be a nice case to find wouldn't it? Too, you made bayonets on the line beside the rifles, others didn't.
