There was a discussion on the radio yesterday about this very subject. The thought is, yes there is a shortage. It is being caused by "panic buying". The ammo companies responded to the shortage during the Clinton years by hiring more people and increasing production. When things finally calmed down, the ammo companies were left with large inventories and no sales. This time, the companies are producing at a steady rate. When the panic buying stops, the supply will catch up to the demand. As soon as people calm down, things will even out.
In the meantime, get out there and buy everything up, and beat the hoarders! (Bob's dancing bannana)

Most all of the retailers that you talk to say they have NEVER seen such buying, the panic of the klintonista years was just a blip on the radar compared to this.
This has oh so much more reason than just a fear of any ban, this has more to do with civil unrest, total economic collapse and the the very real possibility of an armed rebellion, civil war or another war of succession.
