Acetone? looked at Isopropyl but that's got alcohol

I used those for years without trouble. Their real rubber, that's why they do that. I suspect those sat for quite a while without even a look so heat may have done that. Look at the old CAL rifles with the rubber butt-pads, Jostam and such? They did the same. Just age and time.

Its been cold enough on the west island so mabe try overnight in your garage...... then ''peeling'' off the rubber when its hard ,like an orange peel. cheers Glenn

Then perhaps some lighter fluid to rub off the residue.

Here's the cure for preserving natural and other rubber composite recoil pads and buttplates, (not plastic).

G96 or other non harmful silicone spray.

Soak the heck out of them at first and apply more when you clean or maintain the weapon. Of course, it won't help the OP's mess but if you do it from the start, you won't have the mess to contend with in the first place.

That is exactly what I was thinking.
I use a slip-on buttpad, but the instructions said not to leave it on, so I never did.
It is fairly easy...
