L1A1 long handguard screw

Hi folks.
Anyone have a LONG hand guard screw that fits the wooden foreends as opposed to the plastic ones. I just changed furniture out from the Black Plastic (Maranyl??) and realized I cannot fasten the handguards together as the screw doesn't reach.

Why not take your existing screw down to your local hardware store and ask if they have something similar but slightly longer? A screw that is a little too long can be shortened. You may wish to take the hand-gourds with you if they are currently off the rifle.

It is probably not a good idea to take the entire rifle down to the store to check for fit, as this may result in you having the local SWAT team on your back, literally.

$16 is a bit bloody strong for a commercially available screw cut to length mind you, but it should give you a lead.

I'm sure one of the gun plumbers will tell us the screw/ thread size.

Is not the screw required, in this instance (for the hand-guard), have a UNF thread?

It's a raised head countersunk screw, with a straight screwdriver slot, and the thread size has already been stated by Jim. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting such a screw in a country like the USA. By asking for a gun screw you are paying many times more fore the screw than you need to. It is just a screw.

Or even better still, if you are into originality or concourse examples in your collection, forget all of the above. Just cut the short screw in half, sit cut end in lathe, square off, centre and bore in, say 6mm or so with a 2mm or so drill. With me so far? Now take standard piece of similar o/d rod, cut to new required length, turn pin on each end. Fit together, silver solder, make good, clean up and paint and that's it. Simple, original, takes about 15 minutes or 20mins if you rush the job.

Works a treat, made myself a long Thompson front grip screw from a rear grip screw not a few months ago. It's called '....where there's a will there's a way'. Or in this case, 'where there's a will, there's a SIMPLE way.....'

It's not too difficult to make the screw from scratch provided that you have access to a lathe. It's only a piece of bar turned down to size with thread cut on the end. Some people get excited about the idea of producing the slot for the screwdriver because they don't own specialist slotting/milling machines. But it's not difficult to cut the screwdriver slot with a hacksaw followed by a needle file.
