OK new Chassepot.
This one is nice, the bore is mint. Carried a lot but short little, if ever. The stock and receiver were sanded a long while ago which rubbed off some of the markings. But it is an all numbers matching 1867 Cahen et lyon Chassepot.
So this was what i was able to cypher from the partial markings.
** et lyon cie Cahen-lyon et cie
***den Bir***ham Tipping & lawden Birmingham
The markings forward of the makers mark are a bit harder to get. Any one know what they mean, I'm all ears. They are in Frenchscript which is not easy to read. This is what i think i'm seeing thanks to a magnifying glass and a grease pencil. Top to bottom left to right
Ch* almost looks like it say 6pm. next and slight lower R*es Lme co
des r*om** for sure it says Des. R*om* could also "some" or "rhone" May be it is Rohan?
St Etienne 1870
Going out on a limb, i think it could be Chateau des rohan but i could be wrong. Any idea what LMEco means?
any info welcome. More pictures coming when able.Information
