Early Beech No4 Butt?
Good evening all. I've been having a bit of a tidy and rummage round, and while sorting out the Enfield wood department, lol, I found this Butt at the back of a drawer. I picked it up years ago from god knows where. I over cleaned it at the time, I remember it was very dark and oily, but I'd deal with it differently these days.
I'm thinking it MAY be a very early FAZ No4 butt as it has the cutout for a marking disc. Also, the markings under the wrist include 3 large F's with serifs, I've not seen this before but as some forum members have seen more Enfield furniture than I've had hot dinners, I'd be very interested to hear what others think as I'm just guessing really.
It's of normal length and I've chalked the markings as best I can.
Hope the pics load up.

On the 'end on shot' of the butt, could it be a 'mirror image' picture and the marking is M/189 ?
If so this would indicate the manufacturers wartime code.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Now that's 'thinking outside of the box'.
I cannot find a manufacturer in my lists of 'codes' for M189 - any ideas ?

Oh yes of course, must be the Butt plate, that explains the mirror image.

Thank you - that ties in well with a Butt-Plate manufacturer.

Thanks Kiwi, great stuff, cant believe I didn't think of the mirror image of the butt plate. Well done Roger.
Hopefully someone will have an opinion on the marking disc cut out, I'm curious if that No4 trials rifle feature made it in to very early production or is it someone with a drill post war. I was hoping the wrist markings might shed light on it.

It's not much blurred edge, but I've noticed that Faz seemed to used a bold F with prominent serifs as a marking on early manufacture components (you see a smaller but similar/same font F on early singer sight cursors, for example), so your deductions could well be correct.
P.S. No sign of that package from the US as yet.....

Is the "N" stamp always there for a Normal length butt? I thought only the other options (Long, Short and Bantam) were marked; but I'm no expert; so please correct me if I'm wrong!
