I have a beautiful 1946 No.5 Mk1. made at BSA Shirley (Blued VS the painted look from fazackerly) and really in lovely condition. However the forend is a teeeny bit loose and I've figured out that the collar that goes around the main / king screw is slightly longer than it should be, so even when tightened fully down it doesn't clamp the wood perfectly as it should.

Not sure if I should fire as is OR lightly reduce the length of the collar bit by bit so it all tightens up first. Any thoughts please?
