Standard Products Refurb
I didn't wan to hijack WinterRanger's thread reference his new Inland carbine (really nice rifle) so I started this one since I had some questions:
1. When they refurbed the rifles after WW2 and converted them to Type 3 sights, barrel bands and safeties, did they also just "mix master" them and use whatever parts were available"
2. This rifle has a "STD PROD RWH" stamp on the stock. I am not sure but their may be a very faint "IO" stamp in the slingwell. The upper 2-rivet handguard has no marks at all. Are these the normal marks for a refurb?
3. The recoil plate has no marks and appears to have a "seam" in it (commercial part?)
4. The barrel has some weird gray colored coat on it partially obscuring the "Underwood" manufacturing mark, the month of manufacture and part of the flaming bomb. Any idea what this coating is? If so, can it be removed?
5. It appears to have an NPM butt plate, but the edges of the plate have a weird texture to them. The plate is extremely clean so I don't believe this is due to wear/corrosion. Is this possible a commercial part?
6. The flip safety, trigger and magazine release appear to be a darker color with a smoother texture than the rest of the gun. Are these correct or commercial parts?
Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Just to start off, they used what parts were in-the-bin to bring the carbine back in spec. No regard for the manufacturer.
Unmarked commercial parts can be impossible to ID just based on a description. Pictures always help. Sometimes, you just have to know by the look, or be very obvious like the seam (casting mold mark) you mentioned on the recoil plate.

It's 'Clean' because the pitting on the edges and counter sunk hole have been media blasted, then refinished.

Are the milling groove lines around the barrel consistent ? I ask because in the area you call Weird Gray colored, the milling lines look muted.... barely there, if at all.... But picture limits seeing that detail.
My 3 part guess here would be:
#1 When the barrel was Re-Parked that area was contaminated with oil and didn't take the new finish. Maybe a hand print ?
#2 The Re-Park has come in contact by something that pulled the finish off. By accident or by purpose. That area now appears per the picture to show what was the Underwood Original Finish.
#3 Someone's tried a touch up with something like Oxpho Creme. The left side where dark line runs along Gray runs pretty straight. Like a stroke line using something like Oxpho. But when it dried or after to many coats.... final color didn't match.
You see this often when guys are trying to hide the inner pad wear from Bayo bands.
When you have a part that has been re-parked with the dark blue/black you can wipe Muriatic Acid..... by limiting the time it's on it, you can strip the dark blue/black. Neutralize it and see what's left of the Original Park...... Provided it's only been Re-Parked the 1 time.
And provided the Original finish hadn't been completely stripped previously by chemical or media blasting.

Edit To Add: BooKoo Magnified the Dark Finish on the barrel appears to be quite thick. Is it some type of Paint ? Ceramic Coat ?
Looking at the top left it really looks 'Thick'.

It is a weird coating. It appears to be thick and fills in the normal striations that you would find on an M1
carbine barrel. I took some Hoppes #9 and a brass brush to it with no effect. It is smooth to the touch and definitely appears to have been applied in a liquid form. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to have it stripped and re-parkerized?

Do you think there's any chance it could be Cerakote? The pictures of that Underwood the other day, almost looked like the brazed TH was Cerakoted. - Bob

I don't think it is Cerakote. It looks like it is rubbed or applied rather than sprayed.

No, the receiver looks like regular parkerizing. I attempted to scrape the material with my fingernail near the flaming bomb stamp and there is a slight ridge that you can feel. I read another ost that mentioned not exposing oxpho finish to copper dissolving cleaners so I have applied a couple of different ones to small spot and waiting to see what happens.

Here are some photos with flash and without of the receiver.

Look at your last pic enlarged.... near the punch stake behind the bolt. You''ll see some 'Debris' there.
Is that under the Finish ?
Is Front Sight Pin Still Blued or does it match the new Barrel Finish?
