Stripped saavge #4 receiver with a”T”
Hi all,
I posted this in another forum several months ago. I have a stripped Savage No4 action. It has a lone T near the trigger guard cross screw. There are no mounting holes or milled areas for scope pads, action is 1942 27C series. The only other thing I can see different from all the others I have seen are the two “W” marks on the action body
Any chance of a special piece here ?

The font resembles that used for the "TR" markings, but if it had any connection to the "TR" selection and markings it would presumably have to be some briefly used variation before the typical markings were established as the SOP.
And there's no evidence of that AFAWK!

Yes, I had hoped someone here may have seen something similar in the past. With he prices of No4 TR rifles hitting highs it would be my only chance at one.
Correct me if I am wrong but, In my limited experience, The Savage marked guns seem to be earlier in the serial number range.

Yes, they seem to range from the 0C range up to around 15C or thereabouts.
IIRC the TR mark on the butt socket was applied at the BSA Shirley factory to rifles that had been selected to go to H&H in London to be converted into sniper's rifles. It would therefore be unusual to see TR on a rifle from any other manufacturer.
I don't know what the T signifies, but I doubt that it relates to it being a selected rifle for sniper conversion. If yours had been converted there would of course be the tell tale screw holes visible on the body side wall where the body pads (mount bases) had been.

A similar single "T" is sometimes seen on the Nock's Form or over the chamber area; meaning unknown to me!

I’m an intrigued. I have seen a number of makings on savages both normal everyday rifles and those converted to T or T less scope, I have haven’t noticed a marking of this type in this location before. As others have said the TR marking wouldn’t be normal for a Savage, this isn’t a primarily contender based on s/n for conversion, and if any conversion had taken place there would be some evidence of or from the pads. However interesting non the less.
