20 July 2022 Garand Picture of the Day

    160817-N-PM781-002
WASHINGTON (Aug. 17, 2016) An M1icon Garand rifle used by U.S. Marine Corps Raiders during the World War II attack on Japaneseicon military forces on Makin Island is at Naval History and Heritage Command's (NHHC) Underwater Archaeology Branch. Due to the rifle's significant surface concretions, corrosion, and other physical damage, NHHC Underwater Archaeology Branch is performing an assessment of the artifact's stability.

I think if they put in a block of clear epoxy resin it's further deterioration would cease. No air, not a further problem.

The metal parts may be in much better condition than they currently look.

Pretty neat you can still see the oiler I believe it is, in it's storage compartment in the butt stock. I bet the damage in that area was either caused by a bullet or shrapnel smashing the stock in that area. Probably didn't turn out well for the young man carrying it I would imagine.

Yes, the early Nickle oiler and pull through case. That's been noted on other descriptions of the rifle...
