Probably one of the most improbable stories of a damaged aircraft being able to return to base is that of the Israel Air Force F15D that lost an entire wing in a collision with an A4 Skyhawk during dissimilar combat training over the Negev Desert. The pilot regained control by hitting the afterburners to raise his speed sufficiently that the lifting body shape of the wing root provided sufficient lift to stop the uncontrollable rolling of the aircraft. They had to land the aircraft at a blistering 260 knots to maintain control and managed to stop only 20 feet short of a barricade. The aircraft was repaired and returned to service.
