    Gas Trap

Made me chuckle to hear the Brit narrator matter-of-factly describe the rifle as "a Gas Trap." I'm reminded that the GCAicon proposed that term in about 1992. Prior to that, collectors used a myriad of terms for it, including "First Pattern," "1936 Type," "Early Model," "Model of 1936," and several others. Then in '92 GCA member Steve Marvin wrote an article on them titled "As Seen Across The Counter" in which he used the term "Gas Trap." That really rang a bell, so I checked with Art Tuttle and asked him if he thought that was appropriate. He agreed that it was a good description, as was the obvious follow-on "Gas Port" for the 1940 type. So did all the early collectors like Scott Duff, Billy Pyle, Kip Feiler, Dave McClain. In the next issue of The GCA magazine we proposed that Gas Trap and Gas Port be standardized as the accepted terms. From then on, they were

I appreciate his giggle at the dig the Brits had to give the rifle (with their name) while knowing it was truly a superior design.
