    Winchester P14

Just got a Winchester p14 rifle, my first p14, I’ve been hitting up all the websites for information on the rifle, it does have some import markings under the front of the barrel, serial number is W238,xxx, took the top handguards off barrels has same serial numbers a larger 17 stamp along with some others, bolt has matching numbers and the ladder rear sight has same serial number, front sight has a W on left side, the volley plate has an E on the left side, it has a leather sling with brass buckle, the bore is bright and shiny with plenty of lands and grooves, I would love to post some pics but I can’t seem to do it.

She's a beauty Rakkasan and the Winchesters are the best of the P14 family. Only Winchester made P14s were selected to to be fitted for the fine adjustment screw in the backsight because of their superior build quality and accuracy. Your rifle is a MkI* which means it can accommodate the longer left bolt lug and if you look on the bottom of the pistol grip you might still be able to see a six pointed star which tells you the rifle went through the Weedon Repair Standard in 1939 as the Britishicon government brought the P14s out of storage. A letter stamped below the star will tell you which factory performed the WRS. I own a Winchester P14 MkI* and it is an excellent shooter. Yours should be too.

Indeed the Winchesters were deemed the most accurate of the bunch by the Britishicon. During WWI and post war they were fitted with telescopic sights and used as sniper rifles throughout the empire. My personal P14 is a Remington however my M1917 is a Winchester.

I did the best I could to pull the manufacturers mark off your stock. There's not much of it left but from what I can see my bet is it's a Remington stock as there's a straight line with a circle at the top or so it appears. Don't fret it was probably done by the British during the referb prior to WWII. They were in a rush and didn't care much about keeping the rifles matching as long as they were fully functional and safe to shoot.

Indeed it's a beauty and I wish the two of you many good years together.

For what it is worth, I have somewhere in my parfts bin, a Remington marked Pattern 1914 (f) fine tune rear sight. An odd duck at best.

That would definitely be an odd bird. Everything I've read to date says only the Winchester P14 rear sights received the fine screw but as we milsurps collectors constantly are reminded, there are exceptions to every rule.
