That's a smoke, right? Not a WP?

The predecessor to the M2A1 grenade chemical projection adapter. Later on, the M2A1 would use a setback ring to hold the spoon instead of the way pictured. The setback ring or setback band is a ring with a spring that slips off the spoon handle under the force of takeoff. You can tell they're using a regular 4 prong M1
adapter and making it work

Well, WP sure gives a better smoke screen than FS types do. When they burst the smoke comes from everywhere instead of just the grenade body.

I like Willy Pete, however when in Basic Training in 1970 when we were on the grenade range we got a demonstration of all the grenades before throwing our own. When the WP grenade was thrown a really big Drill Sergeant from Hawaii was tasked to throw it. He wound up and pitched. And immediately ran like a rabbit. First thought was "WTF," and second thought when it detonated was "WTF!!!!" as some of it reached his pit. Far far better as a rifle grenade. And no, they wouldn't give trainees a WP grenade. Just two HE.

Exactly. I had the opportunity to be present when our armored vehicles fired their RP launchers in '95 or'96. As they went skyward they were exuding RP and snarling. I was lucky and the wind was against them and in my favor. No one was aware I was present when they fired...pretty enlightening. Pretty dangerous.
