Nitro or Cordite? .375 Flanged Nitro Express

I'm looking at a very nice BSA civilian hunting M.L.E. on Gunbroker right now that is chambered in .375 Flanged Nitro Express which is basically a necked up .303 Britishicon round. The .375 Flanged NE designed in 1899 only came with one offering in bullet choice, 270 grains. Stamped on the barrel along with proof marks is 375 EX over CORDITE 40 - 270 MAX. I find it interesting that a cartridge designed as a nitro round would be stamped cordite or is there sort of "dram equivalent" as there is with shotgun shells?
