    .308 LE No. 5 Mk. 1

Have just finished refurbishing the latest acquisition:

LE No. 5 Mk. 1, 7.62mm / 308 Charnwood Ordnance conversion, drilled & threaded bolt handle, original bolt number filed off. Charger insert for .308, Enfield 10 round magazine marked CR 141A. Correct length, shortened LE No. 4 Mk. 1 fore-end with plugged groove under the barrel. Long No. 5 buttstock (top marked „L“) is more then one inch longer than standard No. 5 buttstock. Original No. 5 lightened action without electropencil factory markings, stamped „CARBINE 7.62 mm CO 00010“. No other stamps apart from BMP proofmark.

Think the next step might be a "hung trigger" conversion with a shortened No. 4 Mk. 2 fore-end and a fore-end cap.

On the down side, these Charnwood Ordnance conversions were/are neither fish nor fowl and seem to be kept at arms length by shooters in the UKicon due to their, what some unkindly refer to as, their 'enthusiastic amateur' status. The story goes that 'technical expertise' was lacking in their products.

Hope I haven't upset anyone with those views...................

No offense taken. `Tis just a rifle. But I don´t think they needed much in the way of expertise. Stirling AND Enfield made plenty of conversion sets so that even armourers in Sierre Leone were able to convert Enfields to .308 Win. The charger guide and the Enfield mag work perfectly and it´s even more reliable than my other (.303) No. 5. The longer No. 5 buttstock is also much appreciated.

I´ve only taken it to the range once (last week). 300 metres. After b*ggering around with the elevation a bit, I got a nice (for me) group about 1 1/2 inches wide (the ruler didn´t come out that well in the pic.). Still looking for a Parker Hale No. 4 with windage settings.

That's a very good 300m group. I wish I could shoot that well with open sights.
