Picked up this little gem from P&S Militaria this week. It's an M1917 bayonet converted from a P1913 bayonet (bayonet for the P14) for use on the M1917 by US ARMY Ordnance.
As I understand it (and acceding to my reference material), when the Americans entered the war and switched from P14 to M1917 production, they still had a few thousand P14 bayonets left over. Rather than let them sit idle, the Americans converted them to M1917 bayonets by striking out the Britishproof mark and stamping a "US" property stamp. Additionally, the Pattern 1913 scabbard had a hanger welded onto the chape so it could be hung from the M1910 cartridge web belt. The scabbards were also painted field green, vice the dark brown of the British issue scabbards.
This particular bayonet is a Remington. Only Remington and Winchester made Pattern 1913 or M1917 bayonets. Eddystone was actually a Remington-owned factory and Remington centralized bayonet production at the Ilion plant. Winchesters would have shipped with Winchester bayonets, Remington and Eddystone made rifles shipped with Remington bayonets.
I bought it to go with my October 1918 Eddystone M1917 and M1910 cartridge belt as a set
Note that although the chape is an original WW1 part, the leather is stamped 1942 meaning it was repaired in 1942 by having the leather replaced and the scabbard re-painted. I *think* the maker is "ADAMS", but the first letter is hard to make out.
