There was a company that restored military rifles, Johnson '41, Springfield 1903 & A4, Mauser 98 and M1
rifles, they were returned in a wooden transit box, the company was Mitchell Arms. Don't know if this is one of their examples or not ?
You can contact the CMP
and for a $25 fee, they will check their records for sales

Miltech did not "restore" rifles. They sold "refinished mixed parts rifles with new wood".

Could it be a "new Springfield Armory" rifle? Perhaps they started their serial numbers where the "old Springfield Armory" left off? Just my two cents.
