Why is this handguard worth so much?

I just sold this one last week for $57.75. I was reasonably sure it was a Winchester.

It seems like prices are going up rapidly for nice stocks and handguards.

    Expensive front handguard

If you could find one, a handguard like this could start at $1500 a few years ago. It is not so much the wood (unless it is numbered and that would change everything) but that ferrule at the front. Difficult to determine if it is a repro or original from the outsideAttachment 21232

    RCS

Is that handguard a pre-production example or production gas trap example or....?

    gas trap front handguard

Photo is a repro, about 12 to 15 examples made-up in the east coast area around 1992? lip was tig welded to ferrule on a fixture (not a Rahway example). R. Milton (Ohio) sold repros in the late 1980's too.

Photo below is an original ferrule with lip.Attachment 21275
