Can anybody ID this 03 (I think?) handguard?

I picked up this very nice handguard, it appears to be an 1903, but not in a configuration I have seen?

Your handguard was manufactured during WWII as a spare replacement for use in overhaul. The top rear half has been ground down. Handguards, belt sanders, and Bubba's with too much spare time occasionally don't mix well.

I have seen others stating that some pre 1910 handguards were similar to this, without clips.

Is that correct?

And if so, do we think this was made to resemble a handguard that was flat?

Pre-1910 handguards had a concave (high hump) profile between the rear sight and lower band. The profile was quite conspicuous. And they had no metal clips.

I see no indication that your handguard was made to resemble a pre-1910 handguard. A more logical explanation is that your handguard was ground down to clear the enlarged bell of a telescope.
