Please help with any info on this rifle # 162393

I've had it for years and was my horseback deer rifle for a while It has been sporterized. Original stock cut down and no hand guard. There is no hole behind the butt plate door? Barrel is 23 1/4" different from sight and a Williams rear peep. It looks like the rear sight must be removed to get the bolt out. Sort of a pain for deep cleaning because then you have to sight it in again. I'll try posting pictures later.

Your U.S. Model 1898 Krag rifle, #162393, is not listed in SRS Data. (Number 162394 is listed, but, being close means no more than being close and first assembled near the same time).

Your rifle was originally assembled around January, 1899.
It sounds like a commercial sporter stock was put on your Krag, along with the barrel shortening and commercial sights.

Butlersrangers, Thank you for the information! I got it from a gunsmith friend but I don't think he did the modifications. Too late to ask him now. I will post some pictures when I figure that out and make sure I have the number right. I will also take a closer look at the stock. It is a nice old rifle and shoots well. I love the smooth action. It is the center piece of one of my most memorable deer hunting adventures. Long story. Thank you again for your time.

'sixball' - I meant that you transposed digits when you called your model 1898 Krag an "1889".

That's what kept me away, as far as I could make out he MIGHT be talking about the other Krag.

Thanks guys, I get it now, borderline dyslexic, college was a bitch. So it is a US 1898 30 40 made in 1899. Is there a way I can correct that in the thread title? I'll try to post pictures. Sorry they are not better. I am pretty sure it is an original stock cut down. It has the cleaning rod slot. Were carbine butt plates different? Were rifles drilled fro the trap door in the butt? Well one of six posted. I'll try again when I calm down. OK. I'm better now.

Don't worry about that. The pics are clear... Nice sporter, there are a few here that have done threads about their Krag hunters. I wouldn't try restoration as it doesn't show on SRS list... Bet that one shoots sweet. Mine all did.

Thanks Jim. It's perfect for me, nice enough to be proud of and messed up enough that I'm not afraid to pack it around. It does shoot very well thought it's been a while since I've fired it. For a while it was the most powerful rifle I owned that I could easily carry on a horse. Then I got a 742 Remington carbine with a little 4x scope in 30 06. A good horse & truck gun. The Krag has more class.

742 Remington carbine

I just sold mine, .308 and just about new. What a nice little carbine that was.

I just needed to get a full size bullet mold for the 220RNGC for the Krag. I was using a smaller bullet and didn't get satisfaction. I had a gas check come adrift and stuck in the barrel, caused a ring in the bore. Just about broke my heart and sold it. It was a faux school gun.

That is a nice carbine. That is what I really wanted but this one came along in a screwy 3 way trade that I couldn't pass up because one of the other guys owed me money and this was the only way i would ever have gotten something out of him. I think that 220 grain RN GC is the mold I have. It does a number on deer.
