milled 03
I recently picked up a Remington 03-A3. The rear sight base has been milled off. Does anyone have a clue why someone would do such a thing? I thought that I might silver solder a new dovetail on. Any advice for or against this idea?
Thanx
Bill

Sounds like someone was going to or did make a sporter out of it. Is the receiver drilled and taped to accept a scope?
As far as adding a new dovetail, soldering a new one on may work. Contact Chuck in Denver he would know. He posts here a lot.

though it can be done, it would cost more then the rifle is worth,
to repair the reverse dovetail, and do it right would cost well over 300.00
in weld and mill time alone.
make a nice sporter out of it, and find another project..

There is another less expensive workable option. Find a damaged M1
Carbine rear sight. The front section of the U shaped base is an almost exact fit for the 1903A3 rear sight dovetail. Cut that section off, carefully file to fit, then drill two appropriately sized holes, drill and tap the receiver to attached the modified Carbine sight base. I did this on a 1941 Johnson that had been scalped. I had the section silver soldered - worked fine.

Bill could you post a picture? Some early A3 receivers had the dovetail milled off at Remington and a standard 03 barrel and rear sight installed. Does your rifle by any chance have the '03 "ladder" sight?
