C&R FFL Deals?

I went and got a C&R FFL. Well, still waiting for it, but it is being processed. I see everyone saying that you can get great deals with one. Can someone elaborate? What exactly does the FFL allow you to do?

Right now, I get a gun from the net, and a local range charges $20 for a transfer. I get some pretty good prices.

Can you buy directly from importers? If so, who/where are they? What else does the FFL allow?

When you possess a C&R you can purchase any C&R eligible firearm and have it shipped directly to your home. You will make your purchases from importers or wholesalers like AIM or SOG or J&G (there are many more). You don't have to pay any transfer fees. You can also send a signed copy (DO NOT SIGN THE ORIGINAL) to any number of distributors and parts suppliers and get dealer pricing, Midway USA is just one that comes to mind. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Remember not to sign your original license, make a bunch of copies and put the original in a safe place. I always carry an unsigned copy with me just in case I run into a deal. All the best, Matt

A C&R FFL allows you to make curio and relic purchases across state lines, so if you like road trip gun shows, it's just the thing to have. There are book keeping requirments, but are not hard to follow.

Limpetmine, does that mean you can travel to a gunshow in a different state, buy a C&R firearm and bring it back with you? I did wonder about that.

Absolutely, yes. That was one of the reasons given in 1968 when the GCA was passed, for allowing collectors to continue collecting. Prior to that, anyone could buy and sell, even mail order, no problems. Now, if you live in NJ, it seems their local laws trump federal (figure that out), so know your state laws, too.

With a Collectors License (the so-called 03 FFL) You can transfer (buy, sell, trade) curio and relic firearms (ATF will send you a big book with a list and the general criteria) for the purposes of enhancing a personal firearms collection across state lines subject also to state and local laws.

It does not permit you to engage in the business of buying or selling firearms for the purposes of making a living. For that you need a Dealers License.
