Correction. US was stamped on the rifles in the 50s and 60s by the DCM (now CMP) before sale. US stands for unserviceable stock and usually the rifles were missing a non-essential piece such as a stock band or butt swivel. SS on the other hand stood for serviceable stock and no pieces were missing from the rifle.
