How can I fix handguard in my M1 Garand ?

I am sorry if I posted Tom Findley website link and the image.
I am in Italy and I am not aware of what people is doing in USA ...

I got a suggestion from an Italian friend who is in touch with some M1 Garand shooters in USA : This should be a quick and dirty solution, get a paper clip and cut a piece long same as the barrel circumference and insert it between gas cilynder and front handguard.

p.s.
I only hope that the complete stock I bought at ebay.com in US is not a fake with fake cartouche. It costed me a real fortune including shipping costs to Italy and taxes to local custom.
