Pictures are worth a thousand words... But, it sounds like a Russianicon Capture mixmaster. Comrade Bubba smeared shellac on thousands of K98icon's after they spent years in bins, some outside.! If it is an RC, who knows nowadays but around $300 to $400 is all I'd be willing pay.

One thing I missed when buying mine was,, Look down the stock from the rear to insure it isn't warped. Mine is but I got lucky, I'm a righty and it tucks nicely into my shoulder..

Edit> CAI import.? Russian Capture for sure..

How does one identify an RC? I was thinking there'd be an x on the receiver. I didn't notice one. Will have to go back to the store and check.

It doesn't look like shellac. At least not the red shellac that's on my 91/30. This is more like Birchwood Casey's. Heavy, transparent kind of finish.

Seems evenly phosphated, rather than reblued or painted, like I read some RC's are. Any thoughts on that?

They're asking $400. So I guess it's not completely out of line.

I mostly worried about the quality issues.

But not in any rush. I have a reasonably nice M48 as it is. It just happened to be on the rack and thought I should do some research.

The thing that has me baffled is how such a late year gun isn't in a kreigsmodel (spelling?) stock without a bolt disassembly ring. Now I'm wondering if it is a mixmaster.

Well, a good start would be to read any of the entries in the MKLicon for K98kicon mausers...

There's a full explanation about Russianicon Captures written up claven2 in all of them...

    Example..

    1942 Code byf K98k (Karabiner 98) Rifle

    Regards,
    Doug

Quick Question, if anyone knows... Where is CAI getting all these RC guns? Is Russiaicon just dumping them, or are they coming back in from other communist countries?

Ok, this isn't the actual gun in question, but it's finish was like this... kind of a uniform grey. I'm not even certain if this what phosphate looks like.
