Historical Background: US Bill to Annex Canadaicon (1866)

Most Canadians are unaware that a Bill to Annex Canada into the US was introduced and adopted by the US Congress in 1866 prior to the 1867 Alaska Purchase from Russiaicon.

The text of the bill is tantamount to an invasion plan. It was to come into force upon its proclamation by US president Andrew Johnson. It included the territories of Britishicon North America from Newfoundland and the Maritimes to British Columbia, extending North into the Hudson Bay territory and North West Territory bordering onto “Russian America”. (i.e Alaska) (See map below)

It consisted in the outright confiscation of public lands. It also implied US control over the trans Canada railway system, waterways, canals as well as control over the Saint Lawrence seaway.

Detailed invasion plans prior to WWII have since also come to light. Of course, military planning is purely a contingency, is hypothetical and in no way identical with political intention. But nevertheless ...

    The war of 1812 2.0.....
Let me explain,,, Some nut job congressman introduced an idea. That idea went to committee and never saw the light of day again. Happens all the time in our political system. If I was a congressman I could introduce a bill that says dogs have to be seat belted in vehicles "true". That bill goes first to a committee and is discussed, if its deemed a STUPID idea it goes in the trash can. That's what happened here,, it was NEVER adopted or passed into law. Again it was some nut jobs idea nothing more.

Muffett, thanks for posting the pix. Gawd! They're all so young. 'Course, we all were, once, as are my 2 boys in the service now, God bless 'em.

Jerry, don't worry. You Canadians are doing PLENTY to help the U.S. economy, and I thank you for it. I am reminded of this every time I try to find a parking space at the Bellingham Costco. They don't sell tanks, though. Which is unfortunate, since my wife saved a bundle by buying a Buick through their auto program. Perhaps your PM could contact them?

Gsimmons, I totally agree about needing to mask the taste of Jack Daniels, although I eventually learned to drink it with soda or water. It is a mediocre bourbon (not even technically a bourbon) with a good ad campaign. Do yourself a favor and try Maker's Mark, but not with Coke. Neat, water, or soda. Ice is permissible. Don't make me hunt you down!

Peter, It's always a great pleasure to read your sage advice and be treated to some of your knowledge and experience! I want to thank you very sincerely for all the tips/history/ and practical advice I've picked up from you over the years.

Gentlemen, I hope that you an everyone else on this forum have a very Happy New Year!

    Cheers,

Got to see first hand what helo launched hellfires would do to T72s back in 1991. Most interesting thing about EVERY Sovieticon tank I saw that had been engaged by either missile or APFSDS rounds was the hull/turret separation. Turret usually at least 10 meters from hull and upside down.

Woodford Reserve is Very Good Bourbon, prefer over Maker's. Pick it up at the Duty Free in Blaine when I return from my forays into Canadaicon. Evan Williams Black Label is darn good too for a less expensive whiskey.

Best thing Germanicon tankers here can say about the Abrams is the Rheinmetal gun.

Ah, but that tank will have been recoverable. I bet that it's already back in service. The only true knockout blow is when the in-turret ready-to-use ammo explodes. That splits the hull seams

Not trying to attempt to take this in another direction however where I live there is a law that if there is only a single person (operator) in a vehicle a dog must be restrained while the vehicle is in motion. This I guess is for safety as the dog might interfere with the drivers ability/concentration and cause a accident. It actually makes some sense and I learned of this not that long ago. Have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for noncompliance.

I would think the "nut job" congressman introduced the bill seeing as he was so upset that we, one of the colonies whipped your butts.

Also your congressmen then and now are no "nuttier" than our members of parliament, TRUST ME.

Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

We have a law here that is rigidly enforced to the point of whatever that seatbelts MUST be worn by the driver (and others of course) But it is textbook example of a true victimless crime! The only offender is the driver who is the criminal........... and he is the one who gets smashed up. It's what I call 'natural selection'. A Darwinian feature of man! Don't wear it and you might/will die! Surely you don't need a law.

The cops stand in the 5mph slow moving traffic lanes going INTO Oxford in the rush hour gridlock pulling them in for a £60 ticket. I mean.......... But it does bring in zillions in ticket money. Daft or what?

I wouldn't go that far Enfield. I'd say some issues that needed resolving,, got resolved the good ole fashion way. Don't forget we got our licks in too...

They where doing the same thing around here Peter, it was causing major traffic jams. The locals must have complained because it ceased, does have a dirty, underhanded feeling about it. On the bright side,,, I can ride a motorcycle WITHOUT a helmet in Pennsylvania...
