I think the line you're referring to that looks like "jet de me" is actually a portion of the phrase "disposal of empty cartridge cases MUST BE MADE as prescribed by A.R." This statement is seen on US ammo boxes of the era and in that location.
Just blurriness and wear makes it look all Frenchy.

So are you saying that label would have been on commercial US ammo boxes of the era or military? I haven't seen that before on the carbine ammo boxes that I have. Would A.R. mean Army Regulations? Thanks! - Bob

I assume that A.R. does mean army regulations.
Anyway, you do make a great point - I don’t think I’ve ever seen a carbine ammo box with this label format either. I would definitely say that is this US military format though.
