Ok, sorry about throwing you a curve. I was trying to hide that it has an SA - also the 4 rivet HG has the brass tone to the rivet heads that I believe Bruce cleared up for me on a 5.4 Inland I got a few years back. My understanding is those handguards are commercial, but I've seen several in the past few years and seem to usually match the stocks they were with very well. I was confused and misunderstood about the long channel stocks being Type 3's. Thought they were type 4's with and without the M2 selector cut, and both without the bridge - don't know where I got that idea? Sounds like a long channel Type III would be right for mine - still have not encountered one! I think I have a really nice short channel Type 3 but with a circled P on the grip. It seems unlikely that Inland would have been putting Type 4's on M1icon's - correct? I just need to get back into the books that I have, and spend more time. You guys are great and much appreciated! - Bob

I've had a few of these, all having the long barrel channel.
It's like they started out making the stock for M2 use........ but stopped after the factory side cut.... then sent it over and completed it as a regular Type IV stock, for a M1icon.
IIRC. the bridge was still intact, just had the side cut.

I currently have a couple Type IV WRA stocks with the complete internal cuts for M2...... NO pot belly.

The type 4 stock that was used by Inland was for the T4 before it became the M2. But the stock was found to be lacking and they were breaking under heavy use. That lead to the Pot belly stock that Inland did use and later it became the standard replacement stock for all type carbines. Winchester only made about 18,500 M2 carbines and the type 4 stock was all they used before ending M2 production. I think Winchester continued using the type 4 stock for M1icon carbines if I remember right.

If so they were a supplier to Inland. I'm just not sure if they supplied Inland with Rotary Safeties. Inland did have Safeties integrated from other makers.
Maybe receiving some S&S Safeties from another Prime maker ????
Seems like I remember a past thread about an "over-stamped" Rotary Safety. In that thread or a similar one, it was mentioned that Seymour Smith supplied those with the SS marking. I think the question was whether SS was overstamped with HI, or the other way around? Did some reading (back and forth) between WarBaby and WarBaby III last night - and my head still hurts! My Inland is starting to look "pretty good" in that SA stock! - Bob

    Bob,
I've come across a few over stamped Type IV safeties... some from my part bins.
After reading this first link below... I remember now that S and S in the circle was actually the WWII supplier William Steinen Co.

    https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=6035

And here is a Type IV Rotary marked with a Circled SS on one side. While the other side has the Circled SS Over stamped with a E.I.

    Post Link Below:

This picture from fellow member Hercules Powder, shows a J.A.O. that's over stamped SS in circle on the front while being marked SS in circle on backside.

This picture was posted by member YooperCollector, showing his Type IV safety originally stamped SS in a circle... but over stamped E.I. >>>> BTW He's probably settling in right about now for a Winter Storm Warning with a couple feet of snow heading his way for Christmas day !!

A link below to Yoopers post. USGI Bob... You commented in there about these Steiner Safeties... You were confused there also..

    https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=51511

I believe all the Over Stamping just breaks down to Sub Contractors helping each other out to fill monthly (?) quota to the Gov.

    12:01 MERRY CHRISTMAS..

I knew I could just sit back and count on you to search out those threads for me! Thanks! Yep, Steinen rings a bell now. I should have started this hobby when I was younger. Hope I don't post again with the same question too often in the future. Now, to go check out those threads. - Bob

    From Buford:
'War Baby says they began mid '44 throught the end of production. Starting almost a year earlier. Just wondering about what serial numbers these safteys first showed up? And for that matter, when did the late type 4 mag catches show up?'

    From BQ:
"The 1944 date printed in War Baby! is an error. The type IV safety was standardized in March 1945 followed by the type IV magazine catch in April 1945. For Inland carbines you're probably looking at anything assembled 30 - 45 days after the standardization date could possibly have been assembled with the latest part type. For Winchester you'll find both items at the start of their six million block for reasons I won't get into here."

    Bob,
I'd think we'd be safe to figure that on Inlands, barrels should date late May of 45 and beyond..... 5-45, 6-45, etc. To consider Type IV Safeties and Mag Catches possibly Original Issue.

Charlie, I've been reading my books the past couple days - not just turning pages and looking at pictures, but actually reading the text. It's amazing what can be learned with that method! Also found that searching the site here seems to work better than I've noticed in the past - even found some more places where I had answered questions for others that I'm now asking! Oops! Also, found a couple other threads with late Inlands having s/n's close to mine - some with M2 parts and some without. Other threads brought up the question on when the Type 4 safeties came into use?, and gave good information about the later mag catches. I was a bit uncertain how close to my barrel date (2-45) that Inland put my Carbine together. After reading your post (above) I did some reading in War Baby III and now see that M1icon production was pretty much wrapped up in March '45 and after that only M2's were made. Going with that information and your post - I'm fairly certain mine would have been built with the Type III Safety and Mag Catch. It's interesting that on the "The U.S. Carbine Caliber .30" website site under M1 Carbine, the example shown has these both being Type IV's and under M2 Carbine, the example pictured has both of the Type III variety. Here's a couple old threads I looked up today. On the 2011 link, only the first page is pertinent. - Bob
