Late Inland - Questions ??

What stock would typically be found on an Inland M1 s/n 6,941,XXX as it left the factory? Were the Type 4 (long channel) stocks only used on the M2's, or were some M1's equipped with them? I got in a conversation with another collector at a recent show who also has a "hand stamped" M1 from this era (a bit earlier s/n) and he thinks the "flip" safety on his is original, where I'm thinking it's a later upgrade. My safety has the "double S" and he couldn't remember the marking on his. My gun has a mag catch with the "lug" for 30 rounders and appears to be unmarked - any comments on the mag catches? Interesting that both of our carbines have the diagonal pattern butt plates, but have read that both types could have been used until the end of production. I need to get out the books and do some studying, but thought I would cheat a bit and ask you guys! - Bob

Inland did use M2 parts on their M1 carbines, as did Winchester too. Is the type 4 stock you have a potbelly or not? I have a 6.97 Inland that has a non-potbelly stock with a selector switch cut. I have seen a Carbine Club Carbine of the Month with the identical stock on it, with nearly the same late 6 million serial number. As far as the flip safety goes, it's possible, but I'd expect a flip safety a bit later in Inland's serial range.

I see now that I have a typo on my s/n - should be 6,941,XXX. My stock is a Type 5 SA along with an unmarked 4 rivet handguard. I had the action out of the stock before I bought it, and the only things I figured weren't original were the safety, mag catch, the wood, and maybe the buttplate. The barrel date is 2-45. Bought it in 2016 and still haven't done a data sheet on that one yet (plus 3 others) - must be getting old! - Bob

I've been flipping pages to help but now your SA information blows that boat out of the water...

I'll go ahead and submit this,,,, maybe it will help someone.
At about 6 million Inland and WRA went to a long barrel channel stock. Looked exactly like a Type III lo-wood just having the extra (4.15") channel verses the original 3.15" long channel. I can't say that Inland had it, but WRA added the Recoil plate support/under cut at this time. These I call the Type IV.... long barrel channel, NO M2 cuts of any type.

I have an original WRA 5,811,227 that records show had the serial number stamped on Oct 10- 1944. No way to know when it was accepted, but it has a WRA Type IV stock with long barrel channel, Recoil Plate support cut and no M2 modifications.

When I've handled these Type IV stocks feel thicker on the forearm, though not really visible.

Then as M2 stocks were needed (Ordnance considered them Critical at the time). As needed, Any previous stock could/would be modified to accept the internal M2 parts.

M2 stocks: As they became available, There were 2 versions of these made.... 1 having more of a pronounced 'Potbelly' than the other.

Is S S Seymour Smith?
If so they were a supplier to Inland. I'm just not sure if they supplied Inland with Rotary Safeties. Inland did have Safeties integrated from other makers.
Maybe receiving some S&S Safeties from another Prime maker ????
Being this late in production.. I'd think everyone was ready to empty their shelves.

There was Winchester and Inland at that time frame. Now Ruth lists Inland as using the flip safeties in Mid 1944 but lists Winchester as using at the tail end of production which would be summer 1945. It would make more sense that they both started about the same time. Riesch lists both as using them in the 7 million range which would be late summer 1945. Now the type 5 stock is listed by Ruth being used by Inland during M2 production which would be about April 1945. The T4 used the type 4 stock and that would date it to about Feb. 1945. Now Winchester didn't use the type 5 stock if I remember right but did use the type 4 for their M2 production short as it was.

I know I''d be lost when it comes to Inlands first serial number block if it wasn't for the great write up in CCNL # 346 by Chris.
A piece of Historical literary art IMO.......

Chris covers 6.219 - 6.449 in CC NL 372. I don't see a later block covered in a NL. COMs have some later ones.
