1903 Sporter with interesting bolt handle

No, that's nothing to lose. It's still a serviceable sporter in .30 cal and would likely do a teen boy his whole life as his starter/main hunter.

I hit a snag on buying this rifle. I have a Type 3 FFL but can't that the rifle be shipped directly to me in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia I have to have it shipped to a type 1 FFL. My FFL moved out of state and I can't find a FFL who has a reasonable transfer rate. Most here want $100.00 to do the transfer.

Your bolt-knob appears to be a 're-shaped' 1903 Striker-Rod knob

That would be way easier than reshaping the bolt knob. I could see a cut and threading...
