I'm pretty sure Anniston used "AN" as well. I never saw or heard of a BA4, which is pretty neat. Thanks. I do have a rifle with A4 on the right side of the butt stock. There is also a "4" stamped over an unserifed "P" on the grip area. The receiver leg is unmarked. This was a USGI field grade, when they listed them that way.

AN is seen on stocks many times but I haven't seen it etched on a receiver (yet). Rebuild receiver etching was restarted (after SA-52) in mid 1963 at SA and the other arsenals that marked them followed shortly after.

Variations of the BA4 are seen as such (followed by a date):

    BA/4
    A4
    A/4
    BA-4
    BA4

Maybe others....and assuming all are related to each other depending on who was doing the marking at the time.

Whether these variations were by instruction or lazimess is unknown. To reinforce this Anniston code, when the old DCM allowed the purchase of parts for civilians submitted to Rock Island Arsenal in the 1970s and after, the parts were processed and shipped from locations all over.

The buyer's invoice listing everything ordered had a "source" code in a column listing everything purchased and anything shipped from Anniston had the code "BA4." Many DCM Sales Rifles are also seen with this code on the paperwork shipped from Anniston. Bill Ricca could probably pin this down exactly.
