    My mother's father kept a loaded semi-auto on the mantle for as long as she can remember. As the third oldest of ten that means that most of those children were toddlers for the period of time that the loaded gun was there.
    She says "we did not even think about touching it". Had one of them touched it I shudder to think of the whipping they would have received.

    My father kept a loaded .25 auto in the top drawer of the chest in my parents bedroom. All of us kids knew it was there but we also knew that if we touched it we had better just shoot ourselves with it 'coz that wouldn't be NUTHIN' compared to the trouble we would be in otherwise . . . . .
