    No. 8 bolt marking

    I recently acquired a "sporterized" No. 8.
The bolt has the usual markings (Birmingham proof on bolthead, Fazakerley factory stamps), but BU is prominently marked on the top of the bolt body, which is bright-finished.

Does anyone know what this might signify?

If you mean the locking shoulder on the top of the bolt, then it's the steel batch number. As I remember these, the B is the supplier and the U is the mix but don't quote me on the fineries of this. These bolts were 'new build' and not conversions, so didn't need to take the high proof load
