Just bought a sporterized P 1917 and have a few questions

First off, I'd like to say Hello to everyone and that I am very glad i was able to find your all's site.

Yesterday, I bought a nicely sporterized 1917 Eddystone at my favorite pawnshop after much online research about this particular rifle. I thought it would compliment my M1 Garand.

Anyway, it appears as if it is an older sporterized rifle and whoever did the work to it, did a good job IMHO. Everything seems to be original except for the stock work and scope mount bases in front of the receiver. I find this rather puzzling since the scope bases are in front of the receiver and I didn't think they had long eye relief scopes back in the 50's or 60's. The scope bases, BTW, do not appear to be later add on's.

After saying all that, I will post my photobucket pictures since my computer skills are not as well as my wife's or oldest daughters

After reviewing the thread about the 1917 sniper and Melanie Daniels picture of one, it appears as if my 1917 has the scope bases in the same place. Now I am Very interested in my rifle. However, even is its nothing special, I still would like to put a vintage scope on it. Evilbay does have some vintage scopes but I have no idea which ones are good and which are bad. Any thoughts?

The scope bases are for commercial Unertl or Lyman (plus some other makers) externally adjustable scopes. Post WWII, probably 60's vintage. They're not Posa bases at any rate, so that widens your options.

Jmoore----Thank you very much sir for the info as far as the bases. Besides Unertl and Lyman, what were the other scopes that would work on my bases?

I apologize for asking questions right off the bat (instead of reading all the posts), but it was late when I found this site and was very curious about the scope mounts. I will start reading all the threads and if I have questions, which I know I will, I will ask.

The Lyman 438 is a fairly low cost vintage scope that look like the more expensive Unertl, Winchester and Lyman scopes. I believe it is eight power.

Plus- Fecker, B&L (now just Bushnell), and even a Tasco version of the B&L Balvar. There's others, but these seem to be the most common.

We are camping this week and I am home for a few minutes to check our emails so I will start searching for things (stock, scope, etc.) to bring the old girl back to her original state.
