    Cone,

I didn't want to set up an account so could not look at the pictures. 1901 was not a year for carbines - they made all they needed in '99. BUT, there were a number of ways that rifles became "carbines," some of them - like the Bannermans - having some collector or curiosity value. Some krags ended up in the hands of NG units, state police armories, armories aboard ship in the Navy and CG, Benicia Arsenal, probably Secret Service, USF&WS and BIA, etc. The Kragicon carbine was so handy and the rifle so klunky by comparison, it would be understandable that a lot of rifles would be converted to "carbines" in-service. Needless to say there would be no records.

That said, I would take a skeptical approach to this particular weapon.

The pics are somewhat revealing. It seems to be in a carbine stock. No swivels or saddle ring. M1903 sleeved front sight and I cannot see the complete hand guard but it does appears to be humped. I zoomed in on the cartouche and I think it reads 1901. The conjecture was that it might be an arsenal job. I wish he had more pics and of both sides. SN#431580 ?
