    Ammo box markings

    Howdy,

I picked up this box to go with my Snider-Enfield. I'm running out of room with all the wooden boxes lately.
I'm figuring this was issued through Canadaicon, and the 1888 & 1868 dates are obvious, but I'm wondering if anyone out there in surplus land can add any light to the other markings, ie. stencil, or stamps, unit or manufacturer, on the end and on top?

    Thanks!

Your box looks similar to mine. I also have the large dates stamped in the wood and there is no large red C steniled on the top. My lid is held on by a large screw not the cotter pin affair your has. You can see on your lid and the box edge the hole for the screw that mine has. Where did you find yours, mine was on ebay nearly 10 years ago and was missing the rope handles.

I'm going to assume the 420 is the round count. It also has a W/|\D stamped on the side, (bottom left corner in the last photo). The rivets/nails appear to be brass. Probably to prevent sparks in a magazine??
It would be interesting to find out what the 6 and red C is for.
It wasn't cheap, but I had to have it for the Canadianicon connection.

Possibly Ball Mark 6? There were 9 Marks of Ball ammo for the Snider, if I recall correctly.

D/!\C is the Dominion Cartridge Company, so this is ammo on a Government contract. Government-made ammo would have been marked as D/!\A for Dominion ARSENAL.

When our local Armoury was torn down in the late '60s to make way for a shiny-new "Federal Building" (Post Office, when it bothers working) they found a full case of Martini-Henry ammo in the basement. Drawn cases, too! It was sent back to Ottawa for destruction, of course.

    Hope this helps.
