Hello all
I recently found a fairly good condition Winchester to round out my 1917 collection of all manufacturers. It's a early CAI import.
Traces of red paint in seam between forearm and upper hand guard got me searching for LL 1917 history.
Her's what else I found so far. Early star stamped receiver #87498. Mostly Win. parts and stock except Eddystone bolt sleeve, rear sling swivel, mag. floor plate and follower.
Canadianbroad arrow stamp on right butt stock
Neatly serialized bolt (non matching)
Modified follower (beveled)
staked trigger housing screws

I have a couple questions regarding stock stamps found. First is the stylized P forward of the trigger guard. The only similar stamp I could find is on a pic. of is the "red star" Remington '03s from Britain. I cant find any Brit proofs and hesitate to remove the hand guards for fear of losing the red paint remnants. Would there be any proofs under the lower hand guard?
The other puzzler is the capital S in the scalloped bolt cut out. Any ideas on that?
I've enjoyed doing some research so far, and would like to know if I'm missing any thing besides the Canadian provenance?
I feel really lucky to find a mostly original rifle with a good bore(2.5 MW) that will be 100 years old in December 2017!
Any/All comments welcome
