G98 Stock problems

Hi, I have just obtained a WW1 G98 sniper rifle but have encountered a problem with the fore end.
The lower spring clip does not retain the fore end. The front clip works fine and retains the stock onto the front band and bayonet boss. This means that the fore end happily slides along the barrel.
The lower spring clip does not appear to fit into the band ( unlike that on the front fitting).
Everything appears to conform to the illustrations I have accessed but something is adrift if you'll excuse the pun.
Help and suggestions gratefully accepted.

Are they the correct parts for the gun?

Is it duffle cut under the rear band? You'll likely need to repair the cut to shoot it if so.

Thanks, parts seem 100% but "mtoms" may very well have provided the answer. A duffle bag cut.

Thanks for that. As it came via a German auction house that thought never crossed my mind. I will investigate further. I appreciate the idea.

Do you have a history for the rifle? True WWI snipers, Gew98, are rare. German snipers always destroyed them and thus were seldom captured. I would need to see some photos of the rifle with its bands. Thank you.

Hi, I acquired it from a German Auction house (Hermann Historica). It is dated 1916 number 9028u, all matching numbers (apart for stock- #8880) , fitted with the correct Zeiss scope. Appears to have been re-issued in the 1920's and has the EWB initials branded onto the butt (einwohnerwehr). The scope mount carries the serial number but obscures the manufacturers name.
Will try to tale some shots of it and report back.

This is the rifle. The rifle is not re-issued. The mount is the Reichswehr-mount which Germany used in the interwar period. So definately NO WWI sniper rifle. If you were to ask me, the scope bases are highly suspicious because original Reichswehr-bases were definately not that high. Even the description at Hermann-Historica mentions that aside of this the scope rings most probably were re-mounted.
