Saginaw SG M1 Carbine

I recently purchased a Saginaw SG M1 Carbine, serial # 3.2 million. Barrel is underwood, 1-44 date. Two questions please. Is the barrel original to the receiver? The stock shows a P 9 in the sling well, no other markings. Does this tell who made the stock? Thanks very much for any help.

Great place to look for those answers, but the barrel is probably a replacement and I'm not sure about the "p-9"

If your carbine has an adjustable rear sight and the bayonet type barrel band then it's been through a rebuild like 99% of all US carbines have. That is when the barrel and the rest were changed and updated. Could that P9 in the stock be a PJ?

That S/N is a Saginaw Grand Rapids number. After the Irwin-Pedersen was canceled. It's an S'G' not an S.G.
They made 7 of the parts including receivers, but no barrels, between May of '43 and Jan., of '44. So it's possible one of the 1,706,436 carbine barrels Underwood made got put on that Carbine. Isn't likely that a January of '44 Underwood barrel got on a January of '44 S'G' receiver, but it's possible.
The P9 clearly stamped? Any possibility it could be a 'PJ'?

We need more of your serial number to determine if SG or S'G'.

Split serial number block: Started out as Irwin Pedersen after IP got the boot the rest of this block became S'G'..... 3,212,520-3,250,019

Next block started out as SG 3,250,020, then became S'G' before the end of this block ~3,651,519.

It's complicated... Just give us more of your serial number...... and home address ! just kidding, Don't trust Bruce the Swami.... Never mind he's probably found you by now

Thanks for all the information. The serial # is 3,270,xxx. The stock well is as I stated, is P9. It also has a half circle with what appears to be a check mark. The trigger housing is SG. One more thing about the stock. It appears to have never been refinished but also appears to have been through several wars, lots of dings and a few gouges, but still a very solid stock.

Your carbine is a SG from Saginaw Steering Gear, Saginaw, MI.
Your barrel is a replacement as SG only used Saginaw Div. made barrels.

Follow this link and you'll see why I needed more than the partial serial number you first gave me of 3,2xx,xxx. Now you'll be able to start seeing how the serial numbers started changing over from being made/used by S'G'.... then SG... then back to S'G'... with in the serial number blocks I listed:

Here you can get a better idea of what went on with the serial blocks S'G'/SG. Pay close attention to anything posted by BQ97.

About your stock,
Does it look like Walnut?
Have a Long (4.15") or short (3.15") barrel channel?
Is the wood cross bridge intact?
Any internal cuts for the M2 parts... aka selector switch.. etc?
Is it possible that you can post a few pictures of it, including the sling well marking ?

Stock 'could' be a lightly stamped RSG with the number/letter codes SG was known to stamp in the bottom of the slingwell.
I was searching for pictures of that to use as an example for Spence to look at..... But that gave ole Swami enough time to 'Off With My Head'

look for the NARROW RECEIVER LOCKING TANG and the Tooling Hole on the left rear of your receiver. These if as pictured below, should mean production at Grand Rapids.. (S'G'/IP)

The carbine is an Saginaw Steering Gear made in Saginaw. The trigger housing would be correct for the carbine by maker. The stock sounds like it's a post war replacement. The barrel is not original to the receiver. Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

Thanks again for all the good information. I have shot the carbine but did not shoot on paper. The barrel channel is 4.5 inches. The wood appears to be walnut. It is dark so it is hard to tell. Sorry for so many questions, but what is the wood cross bridge?
