But does anyone know what standard thread size, the 1/4 x 24 tpi, is that John172 got sent in error? I don't recognise it as a commonly used thread here in the U.K. but it could be a non standard pitch size.

1/4 x 24 is UNS (Unified Special), used on some early Harley and Indian motor cycles.
