Years ago some shooters use to attach the rear tang sights that were manufactured for the Savage 99 lever action rifle. I believe there is even a reproduction Savage 99 tang sight available now that is not as much as the original. You do not have to alter your trapdoor to attach the Savage 99 tang sight which also provides a better sight for target shooting
