Years ago some shooters use to attach the rear tang sights that were manufactured for the Savage 99 lever action rifle. I believe there is even a reproduction Savage 99 tang sight available now that is not as much as the original. You do not have to alter your trapdoor to attach the Savage 99 tang sight which also provides a better sight for target shootingAttachment 126496

Oddly enough I still have the tang peep sight I used on my 99 for hunting before my eyes demanded a scope in the woods. I test fitted it to the tang and although it can't be used due to hammer interference I can see the tang profiles are identical. Another thing I noticed is to use that sighting system you loose your cheek weld and have to elevate your face.

You would definitely have to drill and tap 1 hole above the tang screw for the upper mounting point of the sight base. A custom longer tang screw would have to be sourced and with the Whitworth thread would not be a low cost part but it is an interesting thought.

I'll bet guys just tapped in whatever the common gun thread was and used a longer screw stock as available. Of course the other sight wouldn't interfere with the hammer.
