Nearby surplus store got a bunch of unissued Canadianicon Civil Defense wool blankets in that I had to check out. EHS Emergency Health Services and DND which I’m not having much luck finding. One place says they are Army blankets. Any of you Canadians identity that one? I picked up one of each, 1957 and 1961.

Grey, black stripe? I have several left over from cadet days in the 80s. I think dated in 1950s and label from a woolen mill in Quebec. Pretty common, I'd think

Yes, various shades of grey with a black stripe. They do seem pretty common as everyone is selling them or sold them, most seem to be sold out. Very nice, brand new.

Could DND be Department of National Defense? I did find a reference to that.

Yup, big DND marking. We issued two per bed, blanket and dust cover.

They seem very nice, a lot nicer than the green wool ones we were issued. Neither are better than the Polish blankets. They gave them to us when we went to Desert Storm. Brought mine back. And they are in nice colors. Tried to find mine but not sure where it is. It's mostly red with some brown and grey mixed in.

I had an olive green US issue blanket for decades, it had US and caduceus on it. That would make it hospital I guess. Grabbed it when I went to Coronado in '74. They're thinner I think. Don't know what happened to it.

Here are some pics from my issued Canadian blanket. No date on it but a small clue to its age might be that the bunks in the WWII Quonsett huts that we were billeted in while waiting for our flight to Tel Aviv from CFB Trenton in 1998 all had these blankets on them. They were made at VICTOR Woolen Products and although are fairly itchy are very warm.

Is the DND embroidered? It's "painted" on the two I have. They don't appear itchy either, but I haven't tried putting one over me, just handling them. Says they were treated with something to keep moths from eating them.

I don't remember ever seeing anything but a stamped ink marking. I've slept in lots worse than those wool blankets, never noticed itch.
